Wednesday 4 October 2pm-3pm What you need to know about Rope Making - an
insight for genealogists. This is a lecture with Des Pawson. After
explaining the importance of rope in society, Des will explain the process
of rope making from raw material to completed product, the scale of
manufacture and the various sub trades within the trade. Development of
guilds and trade organisations, and trades that may be allied to rope making
will also be covered. Sources for information and possible further research
areas will be explained. (£5/£4)
Wednesday 11 October 2pm-5pm What did your ancestors do? Occupational
records. A half-day course with Else Churchill. Sadly there is no definitive
list of every agricultural labourer in the country. However in certain
circumstances we can glean genealogical information from the records
relating to our ancestors work. From sources for professional people, to
employees of the state to apprentices and freemen there is much that, if you
are lucky, will help you in your research. The Society of Genealogists
Library has a considerable array of source material on its professions,
trades and occupations shelves and much of the talk will be based on what
can be found at the Society as well as online and in local archives.
