Hi Mary
I see Doug has given you details of the children from the parish register.
You may also be interested to know that they are mentioned (without names)
in the will of Joan SMARTE of Grittleton, written 22 Jan 1685/6 as follows:
"Item: I doe give unto my Couzen Cornelius Gingels Sonne and Daughter Tenn
Shillings a peece."
All the beneficiaries in this will are descibed as "couzens" (cousin meaning
"kinsman" rather than what we would mean by cousin today), and whilst I have
been able to work out Joan's relationship to most of them, her relationship
to Cornelius Gingell eludes me.
Joane Smarte was widow of John Smart(e), who was brother of one of my
ancestors. Although I have not found a record of their marriage (Grittleton
registers and many BTs are missing at the relevant time), I am pretty
confident that Joane was the youngest daughter of John JONES, and baptised
in Grittleton in 1601/2.
If anyone knows what the relationship was between Joan Smarte and Cornelius
Gingell, I'd love to know.
Pauline Kennedy
