Hi Bob.

I don't think there was ever an area of Portsea Island named Tangier.
It would be best to get the time perspective of when your ancestor was born,
&
the naming of Tangier Road.
In the 17th century the village of Copnor was surrounded by 5 large fields.
A
few of the names are familiar to me; Copnor was a junction of tracks that
led to
Milton & Kingston. The fields were known as Burfield, Garston & Breachfield;
with Goslingcroft (by the Baffins track), Ketemarsh, Conyger heath &
Mydmuslemore bordering Langston harbour. By the mid 19th century most of the
land had been sold for development.
You may recall that Baffins Road ran north to south from it's junction with
Tangiers Rd to Milton Rd. Most of the roads adjacent to Tangier Rd are
English
place names. The only other foreign name being Algiers Rd. Which connected
to
Tangier Rd further east, opposite the old Baffins Soccer fields. Where I
played
many times during my youth.

Hi all I have just come across an ancestor who was born in Tangier and
Portsea, can any one shed some light on this district. I know there is a
Tangiers road and there is a Baffins pond which I presume is nearby to what
was then Baffins farm where they worked and lived
