Dear Heather,
I would have thought that the Barracks concerned
were possibly St.George's Barracks. and that it was almost certain that they
had their own church in the depot. This was not uncommon and there might
even have been a church built in the grounds of the barracks. I know that
Haslar Hospital had its own C of E Church in the grounds and that there was
a small RC Church in part of the hospital building. I am not sure whether St
George's Barracks is still standing in Gosport, but the story goes that the
splendid building in Gosport with the very large windows and verandas that
gave an eastern appearance to the building should have been built in India.
Apparently there were two buildings approved. One in India and the other in
Gosport, but the plans were put into the wrong envelopes. Hence the mistake.
Somewhere in India there must be a 'Brick Barracks' small windows and fire
places. If you do not have any success with your search I suggest that you
try the M.O.D.
Regards,
Don FRASER
