I have been having a closer look at Alice Hussey.
As I mentioned in my previous email there was an Alice baptised in
Ecchinswell on 6 September 1868, baseborn daughter of Fanny Hussey.
In 1881 a 17 year old Alice is an inmate of Union House Kingsclere
where she was recorded as Domestic Serv, Itchingswell.
On 26 June 1888 at St. Paul, Woodlands she marries George Seymour and
the register gives her age as 30 years and her father as John Hussey,
labourer.
In 1891 census George Seymour age 48, wife Alice 28 and 3 children,
Elizabeth 6, Rose 4 and Henry Geo. age 1 are living Galy Lane,
Kingsclere. All born Kingsclere.
so Alice, if all are the same person, is variously born about 1868
(baptism), 1864 (1881 census), 1858 (marriage) and 1863 (1891 census)
If we assume she was baptised late even though the register entry is
lacking the usual margin note to this effect and also assume the age
given at marriage is wildly out then we have an Alice born about 1864.
FreeBMD doesn't have any record at present to confirm this.
The baptism register has Fanny baptised in 1852 and the 1881 census
shows Fanny with husband Anthony Hockley in Isleworth in 1881 when her
age is given as 27 (d.o.b.1854) so that seems about right.
If Alice was born in 1864 her mother would have been only 12 years old
so an 1868 birth date is more likely for Fanny's baseborn daughter.
So if there is only one Alice Hussey (and I haven't found any evidence
there was more than one) then all the ages recorded for her except
the 1868 baptism one have to be suspect.
The problem then is who was her father. The Marriage entry claims that
her father was John Hussey. It is possible he is the John who married
Mary White and that he had a relationship with Fanny after Mary died.
I wonder if there were any bastardy orders to confirm this?
