For any lucky enough to have ancestors named in Consistory Court proceedings, the following give an indication of what records might be found:

20 Jan 1786
Mary BATES, widow relict of Thomas BATES late of Kingsclere but since of Basing, Yeoman deceased, and all next of kin now living, charged to bring and exhibit on Friday the 27th day of instant [January] the Original last Will and Testament of the said Thomas BATES / if he made or left any / .....
...... to show cause why Letters of Administration should not be granted to William THOMAS of Kingsclere, Yeoman, a Bond Creditor of the said deceased .....
[Certificate to commence Suit dated 25 Nov 1785.]

03 Jul 1801
John BATES and James BATES, Executors of the Will of James BATES, late of Kingsclere Yeoman, charged to appear on Friday 10 July 1801 and bring and exhibit a true and perfect Inventory of all the goods, chattels and credits of deceased, at the promotion of Daniel JENKINS and Hannah his wife, which said Hannah is the Niece of the said James BATES and a legatee named in his said Will.

There are two Inventories with the papers:
Of James BATES Executor
A Bond from Thomas and Charles MAY of Basingstoke Brewers to the said Deceased for £400 at 5% Interest
One year's Interest upon said Bond £20
A Bond from John BATES the other Executor of the said Deceased to him the said James BATES the Deceased for £200 at 5%
The principal Money due on a Note of Hand from Charles HIDE of Brinton Berks to the said James BATES deceased £52. 10. 0.
Interest due thereon £2. 4. 0.
TOTAL £674. 14. 0 from which he craved Allowances of £17 cash discharged to Mr William HOLDING, Attorney at Law, for the Probate of the Will and £1. 1. 0 paid to William OLDING [sic] for writing letters Attendance & c. on the Executorships, leaving a balance of £656. 13. 0. Sworn 10 Jul 1801.

[Harrateen = a kind of linen used for bed curtains]

TOTAL £6.12.6. Sworn 10 Jul 1801.

The Account of John BATES, Executor, charges himself with the sum of £6.12.6 for full value of goods, chattels & credits (except the Testator's wearing apparel), plus £10.10.0 - being Money left by the deceased but which he told this Accompant that he should have for his own use - Total £17.2. 6, from which he craved Allowances for 11 listed items amounting to discharges of £28. 17. 0 'So that deducting what ought to be deducted and allowing what ought to be allowed it appears that the said Executor John BATES hath disbursed the sum of £11.14.6 more than he has received.' Sworn to the truth of this account 10 Oct 1801.

In addition to the usual expenses associated with funerals, discharges included:
8/- paid to the Parish Clerk his fees for the Funerals of Elizabeth BATES and James BATES
10/- Mortway paid to the Minister of the Parish due on the Death of the Testator
£1.1.0 paid to the Right Honourable Thomas Lord BOLTON for a Heriot due on the Death of James BATES the Testator [from which we can deduce that James BATES had been a Copyhold Tenant].

As Jim BATES appears to be the only 'Lister' who has registered a BATES interest, I will be forwarding the full list of discharges to him.
