Many thanks to Dorothy and John who can always be relied upon to generate
very useful comments on any problem raised by Listers. I always find their
input thought provoking and helpful.
Once again Dorothy may have found the connection I have been looking for. I
have reread her earlier message concerning the Kingsclere Parish rent
records and realise that there was more to the information than I had
appreciated. I had not realized that there were only 4 parish houses in
Kingsclere. If I had understood this as Dorothy points out Matthew, Benjamin
& Daniel were all probably living in the same cottage. In 1829 Matthew was
in his late 80s (he died in 1832) Benjamin, probably his son, was a widower
just remarried to Hannah MILES (13/10/1828) and Daniel, Matthew's grandson
was just married to Elizabeth HINE (20/12/1828).
At Benjamin's first marriage to Lucy CHAMBERLAIN what could be his brother
Isaac HITCHCOCK (a son of Matthew) was a witness. The next problem is that
Matthew married Elizabeth APPLETON at Wolverton on 12/04/1773 their first
child was Sarah christened 11/06/1773. Benjamin based on his age at death
was born in 1771. This raises the possibility that Matthew was married
before Elizabeth. His first wife may have died after Benjamin was born and
he remarried. Based on his age at death Matthew was 31 when he married
Elizabeth so a first marriage is quite likely.
The problem is that in all the parishes I have searched there was no Matthew
christened. There is also no earlier marriage recorded, no first wife death
and the death of Elizabeth I don't think was the Elizabeth who died in 1786
suggested by John Lewis. In my notes I have recorded that entry says 'wife
of John' in the margin. There was a John & Elizabeth HITCHCOCK in Kingsclere
at that time.
So if one problem has been solved a raft of further problems have now
appeared
Barrie
