I have been sent a photocopy of a printed page from a book the title on
the particular page is Portsmouth Parish Registers 1808.
p. 136 - contains marriges mainly of the Militia. Some names both male
and female have * after them. The person sending the copy has written
that the * represents marksmen. This doesn't quite make sense to us.
Can anyone enlighten us as to just what the * indicate.
