Hi,
Here is a summary of my Hampshire interests:
James MacDonald THOMPSON (b 1834 Gosport), a sailmaker
m 1855 Portsea, Fanny HERBERT (b 1836 Gosport)
They had 13 children (this we know for definite), about whom I still know
relatively little, other than the basics from IGI and the 1881 census and
some 1891 entries. The youngest, Olive Emily, was born 1877 in Gosport.
The others are: Fanny Catherine 1856, Susannah Mary bap 1858, Amelia Anne
bap 1861, James William Herbert 1861, William (not sure if this is a
different person or just using a middle name) cir 1861, Frederick John 1864,
George Martin 1865, Walter Henry 1868, Lily Gertrude 1870, Kate Alice 1872,
Arthur Alfred 1873.
If anyone has access to the earlier censuses I would be very grateful if you
could send me the details (I'm on broadband, so can accept image files
easily). In 1881 James, Fanny and the younger children were in Orange
Street, Portsea, but the baptism/census entries I have would indicate the
family were more likely to be in Alverstoke until 1860s. I'd also
appreciate any possible entries for James & Fanny's parents/siblings if at
all possible, but this is quite possibly asking too much, especially as I
don't know how well they may be indexed if available.
From IGI, James' parents appear to be Richard THOMPSON and Susannah NICHOLS,
and there are 6 children shown, James being the youngest. No signs of the
reason for "MacDonald" yet. The others are: William Simpson bap 1824, Ann
bap 1825, Richard bap 1828, Louisa 1830, George 1832.
Fanny's parents are John Henry HERBERT or HARBERT and Catherine MARTIN -
married 1822 Portsea. John originated from IOW. They had 7 children that I
am aware of, Fanny being 5th. Most were born Alverstoke. The others are:
Mary 1828, Louisa Caroline 1830, Amelia Maria 1832, John David 1834, George
Martin 1838, Sarah Ann 1840.
Many thanks and happy researching in 2005!
Jacqui
