Captain Louis John Walpole Etherton served in the Hampshire Regiment in WW1.
His medal card is available online from NA
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/details-result.asp?queryT
ype=1&resultcount=1&Edoc_Id=2886581

There are a few mentions of him in the Gazette in relation to his military
service. At the end of the war he was a temporary Captain working in
Ordnance factories - "Insp. of Danger Buildings" relinquishing his post in
July 1919. Search for Ethertons in the Gazette at
http://www.gazettes-online.co.uk/archiveSearch.asp?webType=0

I noticed from other Gazette entries that G. Hammond Etherton was Town Clerk
in Portsmouth - posssibly a relative?

There's a death notice in The Times of 19 August 1942 for Captain Louis John
Walpole Etherton d. 17 August, Emsworth Cottage Hospital, formerly of 10
Onslow Square, London. Widow Bertha Mary.

I looked at some London telephone books and Mrs BM Etherton is the
subscriber at that Kensington address in 1936. In 1925 there's a Mrs BM
Etherton listed in Wimbledon at 25 Southdown Road. I'll do some more
digging.

Hi:

I'm wondering where to find a newspaper death notice for who died in
September 1942 in Gosport, age 67.

Also any connection to the family - he was born in Halstead, Essex, moved
to Australia in 1895, married in Perth in 1903 to Bertha Mary Bagg(e), but
obviously at some point returned to England. Bertha died in Hertfordshire
in 1969.

Thank you, Linda
