A fringe benefit of FreeBMD (http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl) [UK GRO Civil Registration
Index] is that it can be searched by given name(s) in addition to surnames. Very useful indeed if
you don't know the exactly spelling of a surname. Anyways, FreeBMD shows numerous entries with the
given name "Harley" and "Rowland" (more than can be displayed). See the index for details. You can
do the same with the Ancestry.com census indices if you have a subscription. The 1881 census index
is available for free at http://www.familysearch.org.

The Harley family were big noises in their day - Earl of Oxford and all that.
But the use of surnames as Christian names interests me. I have Rowland Drewetts in my mother's
family - not from Herefordshire I hasten to admit.
But Rowland is surely a family name. How wide spread is the use of family names as given names? Is
it flattery or a way of indicating allegance or gratitude?
