Subject: [Herts] Mini BIGG project ( BIGG / BIGGS pre 1830)
Date: Wed, 12 Feb 2003 17:27:16 EST

I'm trying to unravel the BIGG families of the pre-1830 period, specifically
Thomas christened in Welwyn in 1830 and his father Thomas christened in
Welwyn in 1803 and their forebears. It is proving rather difficult - they
weren't terribly imaginative in their use of christian names and also seemed
to shift villages quite often ( at least compared with my more sedentary
Dorset ancestors) and so there are sometimes many namesakes of about the same
age in quite small areas of the country.

I am hoping that any KS who has any snippets of Hertfordshire BIGG ( or
BIGGS) lineage worked out ( beyond what may be guessed at from the IGI or VRI
) for this period or earlier , from any part of the county ( or from adjacent
parts of Beds ) , for ANY of the BIGG/BIGGS tribes will get in touch with me
and share their knowledge. I shall be posting what I can offer as a file on
the GenCircle website and would like to extend it with contributions from
others. Information can be supplied to me as text or GEDCOM files and will be
acknowledged ( or not, if so desired ) in the GenCircle notes. My goal is to
enable some, at least, of the lineages to be mapped out and unscrambled. Any
other BIGG/BIGGS info , such as parish records not in the IGI or VRI would
also be very welcome.

At the moment I am using wills from PRO Online to start the unscrambling
process and have transcribed three:
PROB 11/1921 27 January 1840 Will of Elizabeth Bigg , Widow of Codicote ,
Hertfordshire
PROB 11/1897 10 July 1838 Will of Joseph Bigg , Victualler of Codicote ,
Hertfordshire
PROB 11/1854 22 December 1835 Will of Charles Biggs , Labourer of Welwyn ,
Hertfordshire
If anyone would like copies of my transcriptions, please contact me ( no
obligation to reciprocate). There are several BIGG wills more waiting to be
done, but at 3GBP a download from the PRO they'll have to wait a bit for my
pocket-money <ironic grin> to replenish itself , since they don't promise to
link immediately to my Thomas Bigg clan.

Robert Hillier,
Poole
