Hello to members of the Huntingdon List,

I have recently subscribed, to follow up new information I have received from a 1873 marriage certificate of my great grandparents. JOHN HALL a cartman in Gateshead, Durham, and his wife JANE PAPWORTH. My 1881 census cd's showed Jane's place of birth as Orford Chinen, Huntingdon, I have never seen the actual film of this census to check this place name for accuracy but have been unable to find it on any map or in a gazetteer. A fellow researcher said the place I was looking for was Offord Cluny, she looked in her 1851 census but didn't find any Papworth's in it. However in the next village Offord D'arcy she found the following Papworth's.

26 Charles Papworth H. WID. 32 Miller Offord Cluny
27 Alfred Papworth LG. M 24 Shepherd Great Paxton
Ann Papworth LG M 22 Offord Cluny
43 Philip Papworth LG U 24 Shoemaker Huntingdon

I filed this information as at that time I had nothing to connect. I did not know what the number in front of their names signified - street number? and did LG stand for lodger?

Now having obtained the 1873 marriage cert. I discover Jane's father was named Alfred and his occupation was a shepherd. Jane named her second child Ann - so I am wondering if indeed the Alfred and Ann in the1851 census were Jane's parents?

I have found an Alfred and Ann Papworth in my 1881 census he is a shepherd aged 52yrs and place of birth still Great Paxton, his age two years different from the earlier census, however his wife Ann is 40yrs (12 years younger than she should have been according to the earlier census) and her place of birth differs, now given as Cottenham Cambridge. Living with them is John Moxon a nephew aged 9yrs also born Cottenham.

I dearly hope SKS will have access to a 1861 census as ideally I would like to find the names of Alfred and Ann's children to see if indeed they had a Jane. She married into the Hall family of Gateshead Durham, whose occupations were Carters and it is interesting that in Durham there are a number of Papworths some miners and others carters and one family had a son named Alfred (perhaps named for a grandfather in Huntingdon??).I know I'm doing a lot of surmising but perhaps they are Jane's brothers? their birthplaces are Cambridge at various places Elton, Histon, Elsworth.

I apologise for such a long first posting, but my local Latter Day Saints Family History Centre is now closed until 4th Sept. so I will have to twiddle my thumbs and be patient - unless anyone out there can help?

Kind Regards,
Maddy Simpson
