Subject: [NWKFHS] 1861 census for Dartford
Date: Thu, 23 Oct 2003 08:18:47 +0100 (BST)
Hello,
Does SKS have access to the 1861 census for Dartford?
I am trying to establish the identity of Sarah, wife
of James GUMBRELL, carpenter of Wilmington in 1851.
She was 66 in 1851 and her place of birth looks like
"Hushast" in Surrey. Using a bit of imagination, and
the fact that the Dartford enumerator was probably not
familiar with Surrey villages, I believe she was Sarah
MITCHELL, christened 12 Sep 1784 in Ewhurst. The IGI
shows a James GUMBRELL marrying a Sarah MITCHELL in
Southwark on 15 Oct 1810. James was born in
Guildford, so I don't understand the connection with
Southwark, although his uncle does leave property in
Southwark in his will, and the IGI has another
Southwark wedding which I think is James's sister.
James himself died in 1855 and names Sarah in his
will, but no other clues. If she was alive in 1861
she would be 76 and, if not still in Wilmington, may
have lived with her son William in Lowfield Street,
Dartford? William, also a carpenter and later a
builder, lived at no.127 in 1851 and no.183 in 1881.
I suppose Sarah is more likely to appear on the 1841
census, but I'm not sure if this recorded place of
birth?
Any help or suggestions would be very gratefully
received.
Regards Kevin Gumbrell (WARKS).
