My mother, who was a district nurse from 1947 onwards, used to visit a chap
right up until she retired in the late 1970's who had a received a machete
wound to his leg in a Japanese prisoner of war camp and that never healed
even with modern medicines. I think it quite likely that a bullet wound
could continue to fester for years and then as suggested, general debility
probably just got the better of him.

I usually search for both or use a wildcard.

I don't think it's odd for him to survive so long with the wound. In
fact I think it's the limited medical resources of the time that
would explain this.

Medical staff knew by then what caused infection, they seem to have
had a huge array of antiseptics, but obv didn't have modern
antibiotics. It could take months for a wound to heal, so why not
years? Maybe there is a doctor or nurse on the list that can give
more info.

Perhaps your grandfather went on having the wound cleaned and
dressed, then his immunity dropped and/or more infection got in to
the wound. I'm wondering whether it was cellulitis, which can lead to
blood poisoning.
