Hi Linda,
I have traced my AL(L)RED connections back to about 1707. No
SOLOMON as yet. Considering that most of the population could not read or
write, the parish clerk or curate/vicar wrote down what he heard. Including
dialect aberrations. The people could not lean over and tell him that it was
wrongly spelt. They probably did not know themselves. The ALDRED'S in
Atherton were connected to CHOWBENT PREBYTERIAN CHAPEL. Chowbent is the old
name for Atherton. The locals still call it BENT. An abbreviation. I lived
in Atherton for a few years of my life, so I have some local knowledge. My
brother still lives there.
There is a book "THE STORY OF CHOWBENT CHAPEL". It is
obtainable from the minister the Rev. Peter Hughes email
the price was about 8 pounds sterling a
couple of years ago. The book does not specifically mention the ALDREDS. I
have on loan at my local LDS FHC the baptism and burial records for Chowbent
Chapel. They run from about 1755 to 1835. There are no marriage records as
at that time, marriages had to be in the C of E Church to be legal. The
chapel was founded in 1645, with the present building being erected in 1721.
Prior to that all BMD'S would be in Leigh Parish Church records. i.e. The
parish that Atherton is part of. Hope this helps a bit.
Yours,
Bernie Davies, in very cold Ottawa, ONTARIO.
