Hi Jim
This is a long shot - but in the 1935 electoral rolls I have a family
member, Mary Hamilton living in 25 Blackwater Street, Rochdale with Edgar
and Mary Annie KERSHAW. I cannot find a family connection and she may have
been a lodger with the Kershaw couple.

My hope is that you know something about this couple - a huge long shot I
know - but Mary was an orphaned adult by this time, but I am trying to find
out who she grew up with.

Thank you for reading this message and any help you can offer.

Maureen H. (Perth, W. Australia)

Hi, Caroline,

For south east Lancashire, a very useful source of information about the
basic history of the area prior to about 1900 is the Victoria County History
of Lancashire. This was published in seven or eight big tomes many years
ago, and is still in print at an economic price, i.e. a bit steep for me.
The parts of interest to us have been put on the web free at British History
OnLine (http://www.british-history.ac.uk/catalogue.aspx?gid=20 ) Put the
place of interest in the search box to find more. This site includes the
original maps used to illustrate the text. However, there is a modern
version of these maps at a site for the Salford Hundred
(http://www.mancuniensis.info/SalfordHundredFP.htm ). The maps in the VCH
Lancashire have been redrawn and displayed in colour showing clearly the
ancient parishes and their townships around 1834.

Hope this helps
