This is a wee bit off the subject, but "alternative" names can be due to
more to stupidity than any endearment. When searching censuses, I try to
think as an enumerator who flunked his elementary levels.

My husband's third great-grandfather Glew Leggott [ch. 27 May 1792, Belton;
m. Mary Naylor Moody 15 Sep 1818] became Glue on the victorious side of
the pond. Unfortunately, the viscous spelling stuck. One of his grandsons
was formally christened John Glue Harrison.

BTW:. I only discovered this Axholme list a few weeks back, but signed up
immediately. While I've been lurking in the background since then, I thought
I'd take this opportunity to send greetings to all from Cornhuskerland.
