I am fairly certain that the idea of serving pudding before the meat is
correct in Victorian times.
I lived on a farm in my childhood - we were a bit off the beaten track -
and my mother for some years did exactly that, pudding to fill us up,
then the meat course. What lovely puddings they were too, not seen very
often now. This was the 1940s. I know of other families who did the
same.
I'm not sure about the hangman. I thought hanging by rope at a prison
had been introduced, but I may be wrong.
