Sorry for such a late reply - I'm working through a backlog of messages
In Edward Drury's book the Great Grimsby story he says in 1856 the town had
14 private schools for fee paying pupils. The three Corporation (ie council)
grammar schools (boys, girls and preparatory) catered only for the children
of Freemen. Canon Ainslie had built the National School in the new Market
Place (think those are schools town councils etc were authorised to set up
under the 1870 Education Act) and the Wesleyans had the George St rooms. The
Wesleyan Chapel in George St expanded and prospered even though it charged
4d a week for kids aged 6-8 and 6d a week for over eights.
He also mentions the Wesleyans, after using the Appollo Lodge (spelt that
way) in 1851 were training 200 children. A new school followed in Victoria
St to cater for 800 young people - opened in 1858. He says they had
temporary rented premises from July 1850 (but not where!) until 1857 when
the Victoria St premises opened at a cost of £2,200. Mixed school 297
pupils, infants 204.
I'm not much wiser, but it looks like George Street. No idea where that is
in the town.
Perhaps a hint to anyone writing history books - don't assume your reader
knows where you're talking about - spell it out!
Cheers
Jane
