Subject: [LIN] Help with Settlement Cert. - Thomas PORTAS 1701 Marsh Chapelor North Somercotes?
Date: Mon, 04 Apr 2011 14:47:22 -0500

I have a Settlement Certificate which I don't understand. Does this certificate mean Thomas had settled in Marsh Chapel from North Somercotes? or the other way around? The person who gave me this certificate said there may be another document which could possibly name the members of the family. Is that a possibility? There is no mention of a wife or children and I would like to verify who this Thomas PORTAS (PORCAS) is married to.

North Somercotes Parish 13/SC/1-105
(pg.) 7 Thomas PORTAS legally settled in our towne of Marshchappel. Certificate dated 14 May 1701.

This is to certifie the Overseers & Townesmen of North Somercote that Thomas Portas is a legall member of the towne of Marshchappel in Witness whereof Wee the Churchwardens & Overseers have hereunto sett the hands and Seals this fourteenth day of May in the year 1701.

Then the signatures: Richard Sargant, William Haborgon, Overseers and Churchwardens, Witness, Henry Beresford Curate, Allowed by Martin Brownes? Signed & Sealed by ? John Hall All mixed with some writing I can't read.

Any help is appreciated.
