Subject: [LIV] Manchester workhouse - explain please!
Date: Thu, 3 Feb 2000 15:43:48 -0700

Hi,

I just received a birth certificate for my gggrandmother's younger sister. She was born in Ancoats, Manchester in 1857. Now, the address was Workhouse, Canal Street, and the father was listed as a Packer. The birth was registered by Edw Watkin, Master, Workhouse, Canal Street. What does all this mean? The father supposedly came from a fairly well-to-do family - how could they end up in the workhouse. Does anyone know anything about this workhouse on Canal Street, or were there several of them? What were the economic conditions like in 1857 - wasn't this the Industrial Revolution? I would appreciate any and all the answers I can get. Thanks!
