Hi All,
Am a bit busy at this moment, so genealogy on the back burner, but
have followed the thread on BLACKLER'S Store. Corner of Elliot Street
and Gt. Charlotte Street (BLACKLER'S STORES LTD)
Found out a little info. Formed in 1908 and opened on Tuesday Dec 8
1908 by a partnership of a Mr R J BLACKLER, who had small outlets in
the city and a Mr WALLIS/WALLACE? new store was the biggest store in
Liverpool and at it's heyday employed a staff of
1000. By the May Blitz of 1941, when it was destroyed it was in the
hands of the WALLIS family as Mr BLACKLER had died without issue.
From time to time
during the war, the basement was flooded to provide an extra water
supply for the Fire Fighters. Temporary shops were set up, one in
Church St and another
thirteen in Bold St. It was then rebuilt and the first part re-opened
on 29 Mar 1953, it finally closed in 1988 and is now a Weatherspoons
Pub (One in a large chain of pubs).
Mr BLACKLER must have died prior to the war as in 1929 the store was
in the hands of the WALLIS/WALLACE family, this information is
extracted from 2 Videos I have from Pleasures Past Series I have 1920s
to 1930s and 1940s to 1950s produced by Pleasures Past, 17, Poulton
Road, Bebbington Wirral, Merseyside, L63 9 LA. I have no financial
interest in this company, but plenty of good archival film, very
nostalgic for me.
Sorry that's all I can find
Kind regards
Marg Walton(nee EDGE) scouser, West Mids.
