I think I can help. Family Tree ran an article in their April 2002 issue on
budget scanners. Their top picks are:

HP Scanjet 2200c (www.hp.com)
Visioneer One Touch 8700 USB ( www.visioneer.com)
Microtek ScanMaker 3800
(www.microtekusa.com)

All the above are around US $100. A real deal!

The one I liked best is the HP PhotoScanner 1000 which is very portable.
