Subject: [ENG-LIV] Ellis Family in Everton
Date: Tue, 1 Apr 2003 09:46:27 +0200

Hi,
(I apologise if you read this twice as I have sent this message to the Lancashire and Liverpool Lists).

I am trying to locate further information on Thomas Ellis (born 1842) who married Louisa (née Popple). They had five children who all lived in Everton. The one son was also named Thomas. Thomas senior died in 1904 and after his death, it is believed that Louisa and her five *children* all over the age of 21 in 1904 came out to South Africa.

In the 1901 British Census, I have located a Maud ELLIS who was a Confectioner Shop Proprietor, as well as Thomas and Louisa ELLIS who were still living in Everton.

Were there any problems such as famine in 1904 in Everton, England ? The Boer War in South Africa had only ended in 1902 and there was still friction afterwards. It makes me wonder why they made this big move to leave their home town and to move to South Africa.

Would I be able to track down the Confectioner Shop, other than the 1901 Census, to find out more about Maud ELLIS ?
Where would I find a newspaper for 1904 to ascertain more about this family ?
Does anyone know of this family who lived in Everton ? Or any relations to this family ?

Many thanks
Valda (South Africa)
