WOW Karen!! I could hardly believe what I was reading. Did you find him on
the St.Cathrine's house index?
I am sending this to the list, in addition to sending it to you personally,
so that they can all read the GREAT!!!!! news.
No, I don't have the exact day, or month of his birth. Because his mother's
death was recorded in the Jan, Feb, March quarter of 1923, and because she
died giving birth, I am assuming Alfred James BASTOCK was born during one of
those months or the qtr. before that. I would think that there might be a
couple possible reasons for them to wait so long to record Alfred's birth;
the first being that maybe it was touch and go that Alfred would make it;
the second reason is that my/his father was a seafarer and gone for long
periods of time. I suspect the first one to be the most likely because
anyone could have gone to the registrar's office to record his birth.
Now that I know the details of his registration, I will send for the birth
certificate and find out more, especially who did, indeed, register him.
Thanks for sending me the St.Catherine's house index, I'm sure I'll use it
greatly to find more members of my family.
What a help you have been.
Was the letter O.K. I just hope he is still alive to receive it.
Many, many thanks.
Lilian
