Thanks, Duncan.
The only documented information I have is Harold's New Zealand marriage
certificate which lists his parents as Edward EGERTON (occupation Gentleman)
and Sarah (née CHILD). He is supposed to have siblings Alf and Fanny. There
are postcards dated 1904 from a niece named Emma in first France, then Egypt
and another niece, Liba (Elizabeth?), in Vienna in 1906. A postcard,
probably 1906, is signed from sister Letty in Vienna. There are also
postcards (1905?) from Dollie. From the tone of the cards, it seems as
though Dollie (Dorothy?) may be a sister. Harold did name his eldest
daughter in New Zealand Dorothy, aka Dolly.
For some reason this family just does not show up in the 1881, 1891 or 1901
censuses. If the marriage certificate is correct (some relatives believe he
was born in 1879) then he was born 12 February 1880 and would have been one
year old for the 1881.
My father's maternal grandfather, William Thomas MACDONALD, reported on his
New Zealand documents that he was born in Dundee (where you are, Duncan) but
we found him actually born in London. For this reason I am hesitant to
accept unquestioningly the information on Harold's NZ certificate. Since we
have the postcards addressed to Harold in Liverpool, I am more ready to
accept that at least that information on his marriage certificate might be
accurate.
