My personal final 2 cents - then I shall give up because I don't want to use
this as a discussion thread on anti-virus protection and good PC management.

(a) AVG can automate much, per its own site: "AVG 7 contains scheduler
component that allows users to automatically run defined actions. In
addition to scheduling regular tests, you can also check for availability
and download updates."

(b) I would not recommend AVG in any case. The most recent comparative
review I find - from the PC World June 2004 issue
(http://www.pcworld.com/reviews/article/0,aid,115939,pg,5,00.asp) gives AVG
the lowest rating - only 'Fair'

(c) PC Magazine (http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,11951,00.asp) also
reviewed it (2002). Amongst its comments: "Grisoft also offers AVG 6.0 Free
Edition, which lacks some features, such as scan scheduling and product
support, though it has a simpler interface. But since AVG missed six viruses
on our Virus Detection test and had seven false positives, even the free
version isn't worth the price."

(d) There are better ways to structure your computer life - backups, AV
updates, etc - than waiting for an AV update memo on a genealogy listserve.
But if that works for you, so be it. I won't join in, and don't recommend
that others do.
