Hello Listers,

I don't think this subject is off topic, but maybe someone could enlighten me.

I would say for the majority of people researching family history that to have a
photo of an old family home, business or street, could well be the only image of
their ancestors life and the only visual image they may be able to get.

Is it against the law ( or by-law) to take photographs of a street, if it is
only for your personal use or for the use of another for the purpose of family
or local history.
If you are only taking a photo of the street and not a particular house I cannot
see that this is a problem really.
After all the street does not belong to each individual only the houses and land
they own thereon. However I appreciate that the houses stand on that street,
and that people live in them, but what are the limits, if any are there to
taking general photos if at the end of the day it is not for any covert use (
i.e Surveillance of an individual).
If I wanted to take a photo of a particular house then I would ask the
permission of the owner.

I have just recently encountered someone, who was walking down street I was
taking a photo of, and he gave me the height of abuse for doing so.

If it's not illegal then I will continue to take general local history photos
around my area.

Just in case I get too many replies i thank anyone now for your reply.

Wendy
