Chris
Try the A2 National Archives site for mother and separately childs name.
Sometimes this gives a breakthrough. If father was wealthy he may have made
provisions in a will, or taken to court as previously suggested by another
lister. Did the child have a second name this may give a clue, and if child
married check the marriage certificate father may be noted on that. One of
my marriage certs for "bastard" child had half brother as witness confirming
that the family did know of the childs existance.
Did the mother marry later, it may be to the father? Was a name change
applied for or official adoption by a "father".
These just ideas that can be followed up.
Good luck
Marg
