Bernadette,
Quite a few of my ancestors changed their names and we still don't know what
their real names were, (I have a Hugh/Thomas changing on census records and
both his marriages. His own son gave in 'Hugh' as his father's name on his
marriage, crossed it out and pit 'Thomas').
Some names are interchangeable though, such as Hannah and Nancy, Ellen and
Eleanor, (especially if welsh). One ancestor was baptised as Betty, (in
Yorkshire) and married as Elizabeth, but was called Betty on everything
else.
I don't think that you had to give much i.d. on marriage either. A few of my
ancestors claimed to be over 21 when they were not.
Diane
