In my ongoing search for the Bartons I had someone send me the 1851 and
1861 censuses. I am now more confused than ever. In 1851 James Barton is
already married to Elizabeth Unknown:

1851 census index:-
PRO piece no. HO 107/2187 Toxteth Park
BARTON James 34 Timber Yard Labourer, Essex, Weverimbre?
BARTON Elizabeth 36 Lancs. Liverpool

Along comes the 1861 and it really gets confusing:

1861 Liverpool, Lancashire, England census

James Barton 1817 Essex,
England Head Liverpool Lancashire
Elizabeth
Barton 1825 Liverpool Wife Liverpool Lancashire
James
Barton 1858 Liverpool Son Liverpool Lancashire
John
Barton 1860 Liverpool Son Liverpool Lancashire
Elizabeth M Holley
1854 Liverpool Stepdaughter Liverpool Lancashire

Note the Elizabeth M. Holley, born 1854, stepdaughter to James...now how on
earth can she have been born in 1854 when Elizabeth was already married to
James?

Thanks in advance for any and all help clearing this up!
