Hi Christopher,
I understand now. I had a quick look in 1871, but didn't find anything. So
I looked in 1861 and here is the family I believe you are looking for...

Would you like the image?

Hello Lorriane
Many thanks for your help and for being so prompt.
The information I got from from the helpful Liverpool Geneaology group
stated that Mary Jane in question was (in theory) the daughter of Mary (31
year old, widowed and sister of Richard according to the 1881 census). I was
told that it is likely she married a cousin hence her surname Leadbetter
even though she was widowed.
They found the following via Ancestry (paid service) Mary Jane born 1875,
William Richard, born 1873 and Martha Ann born 1871 all with parents as John
and Mary so that was how it was assumed with John being the father. I do
have Mary Jane's exact date/place of marriage and death in the USA but not
the name of her parents which is pretty frustrating!! I am led to believe
that John died before 1881.
I hope this helps.
Thank you.
Kind regards
Christopher
