Hi Michelle
Congratulations on your new list which I'm sure will be a hit especially
with all the descendants of convicts in Australia trying to find their
roots.
My husband's gg grandmother Ann KENT was born 15 April 1805 St.
Giles-in-the-Fields, Mdx and after a couple of previous convictions was
eventually transported to NSW on the Grenada 111 which arrived January 1825.
While she awaited transportation she was in Newgate Prison where she gave
birth to a baby girl in March 1824. Nothing is known of what happened to
the baby, it did not come to Australia with her and I have tried local
churches, Newgate records to get a clue as to whether the baby died or was
adopted or just in the care of someone.
Coincidentally a girl named Ann KENT [later changed to Mary Ann] arrived as
a convict on the "Navarino 1" in 1841 in Tasmania after being tried in
Middlesex. I have not been able to find any information on this Ann's
parents except that on one of her records her father was shown as "Britton"
no christian name, but then Ann was convicted in the name of KENT so have no
idea where the BRITTON fits.
Could this Ann be the daughter of Ann KENT who gave birth in Newgate Prison
in 1824 although the age differs a couple of years? Wishful thinking!
This Ann KENT married Samuel CRAWSON/CROWSON in Launceston, Tas in 1842 and
they had 2 daughters, Mary Ann b 1852 and Eliza b 1857, both born
Collingwood Vic. A long difference in the marriage of Ann & Samuel to the
first child's birth but I could find no other children. Ann Crowson d
1897 Collingwood, her age here is shown as 80?
Ann KENT who arrived in 1825 on the Grenada married John SMITH [another
convict who arrived on the "Elizabeth 111" 1820], in 1827 at St Johns
Parramatta by Samuel Marsden..she was at Female Factory, Parramatta at this
time. John and Ann lived at Woodlands, Prospect Creek and although I have
no definite proof I believe Ann died in January 1843 at Prospect Creek, her
last son also John [my husband's g grandfather] b May 1842 at Prospect.
John jnr's siblings were Elizabeth?, George, Mary Ann, Caroline Elizabeth
and Sarah.
I have not been able to find any information on George b 1833, Woodlands,
Prospect or Sarah b 1840 Prospect.
If anyone is researching either Ann KENTs or has any information on George &
Sarah above I would be delighted to hear from them.
Regards
Joan in NSW.
