Subject: [NYorks] Middlesbrough/Whitby Census Lookup Requests
Date: Tue, 18 Nov 2003 12:41:37 -0700

Could anyone with access to the Middlesbrough and Whitby census(es)
please look up William SAWDON, b. Middlesbrough in 1848-1849, who would
have been 2-3 in the 1851 census, 12-13 in 1861, etc. By 1881 he lived
in Ruswarp at 8 Cleveland Terrace, age 32, with wife Eleanor (nee
WINSPEAR), 33, and children John Rickinson SAWDON, 7, George Wellburn
SAWDON, 5, Eleanor SAWDON, 3, Ernest William SAWDON, 2, and Arthur Henry
SAWDON, 4m. William's mother, Ann SAWDON, a butcher's widow age 76 is
also listed in his household, along with a cousin, Elizabeth TAYLOR, 16,
b. Fylingdales (incorrectly spelled as Flyingdales!) Ann was born in
Pellerburn, Yorks (or Wilton?) as Ann WELLBURN, and was married to
(probably) Rickinson SAWDON (prob. b. 1807 Hawsker).

I'd appreciate any help with lookups in 1841 for Middlesbrough, 1861,
1871, and possibly 1891 and 1901, for the Whitby area for the SAWDON
surname - they may help to trace William's parents and siblings, and in
1891 would list other children, Henrietta, Ethel, and Frederick Winspear
SAWDON included. I think the 1841 census only lists the head of
household, so would probably not (as it would otherwise) list Rickinson,
Ann, and children John and Betsey, but Betsey might have been Elizabeth
TAYLOR's mother, perhaps (Mary is less likely because of her age in
1851)? So there could be a marriage in the 1860's between a TAYLOR and
Betsey SAWDON in the Whitby/Fylingdales vicinity.

I have an 1851 census record from the Whitby 1851 Census PRO Ref
HO107/2374/250, showing :
Ann SAWDON Aged 44 Born Wilton YKS
Betsey SAWDON Aged 11 Born Middlesbrough YKS
John SAWDON Aged 13 Born Middlesbrough YKS
Mary SAWDON Aged 5 Born Middlesbrough YKS
Rickinson SAWDON Aged 43 Born Hawsker YKS [This could be a
mis-transcription of Hawkser]
William SAWDON Aged 3 Born Middlesbrough YKS

William was a watchmaker and jeweller in Whitby, and apparently
well-known. He was still there in 1906 (d. 1923). Arthur, his son, had
a furniture store in Whitby which was involved in a flood in 1920. He
was also an Auctioneer in the 1940's. In 1943-44 or so, as a child, I
visited my Whitby great-aunts, Nellie, Hettie and Ethel(? - can't be
sure of names!) when the V-1 flying bombs were still coming, and the
V-2's had forced us to flee our London home. One of them lived in Rose
Lane, another at 16 Castle Road, and one's home backed onto the railroad
tracks.

Rickinson probably owned a piece of land in High Hawsker where we parked
our caravan in the 1960's as a holiday rental, and may have been the
source for Sawdon's Lane, a path leading from Hawsker Bottoms to the
foot of the cliffs, an area where there were outcrops of jet that my ggf
William may have used in his jewellery business. Sawdon's Lane is
mentioned in a 1969 edition of Horne's Guide to Whitby. There is also
family information that one of my SAWDON ancestors owned or captained a
fishing ship out of Whitby, but I don't have any details.

Also any help would be appreciated regarding parents etc. of Elizabeth
TAYLOR probably in 1871 census for the Fylingdales area. I'd like to
know how she was related!

Thanks and regards
