Having written to the list with part 1 of my surnames in and around
Northallerton I thought I ought to write about the surname BIRD in
connection with my HIRST family too.
Godfrey HIRST was born in 1843 at Northallerton the son of Godfrey Hirst and
his wife Ann RUSSELL. Godfrey was their second son and he had a younger
brother Thomas.
In the 1851 census Godfrey was at home with his parents but he is missing in
the 1861, I think he may havebeen in Whitby but as yet have not been able to
check that census for him. By the 1871 he was marreid and living at
Grosmont Eskdaleside with his own family and wife Hannah.
He had married Hannah sometime in between the 1861 & 1871 census and I
believe her to have been Hannah BIRD as I have found a marriage on FreeBMD
in Mar.Qtr of 1868 at Whitby, where Godfrey Hirst appears and the only
Hannah on the same page is called Bird.
the 1871 census shows at Eskdaleside Grosmont
Elizabeth Hodgson head widow born, at what looks like, Melton
Mary Bird aged 24 dau. born Eskdaleside
Elizabeth Bird aged 22 ditto
Ann Bird dau. aged 19 ditto
Wm. Thos. Bird Hodgson son aged 7 born Eskdaleside.
I can say that this appears to be Hannah Bird's mother and siblings because
of another connection between the Hirst and Bird families I have.
In the 1881 census Thomas Hirst, the brother of Godfrey, is shown with a
wife Annie born at Grosmont age29, but living with them is Thomas's sister
in law Elizabeth Bird unmarried born Grosmont age31. This little Hirst
family were living at Kelfield Stillingfleet.in 1881.
A search of the FreeBMD site shows for the Sep.Qtr of 1871 at Whitby that
the names Thomas Hirst and Anne Bird appear on the same page.
Thomas had been an apprentice Plumber in 1861 and this is the trade he had
in the later census, when he employed other people and took on apprentices.
He and Ann and their children moved to Kingston Upon Hull which is a place
that the Hirst family had connections too through at least two of Thomas's
great uncles who had both had businesses in Hull in the early 1800s
In 1881 census Godfrey Hirst and his wife Hannah Bird were living at
Baxtergate Whitby where Godfrey was a Jet ornament manfucturer employing 4
others. I have been told that Godfrey was famous for producing Whitby Jet
mosaics "made by a Whitby man in Whitby" these were sold mainly to the USA
and Australia.
Godfrey also joined the Lion Lodge of Freemasons at Whitby in 1866 in which
records he was shown to be aged 23 a clerk at Grosmont, which makes me
believe he was in that are in 1861 as well. Then in May 1891 Godfrey
re-joined the same lodge when he was shown to be aged 47 and an accountant
of Whitby, in that years census he had the same occupation of Accountant.
In the 1891 Census Godfrey and family were still in Whitby. But in Janaury
1901 Godfrey died at Heaton Newcastle upon Tyne and in that years census
Hannah and her children shonw in that same area. There was a note in the
Whitby Gazette at the time of Godfrey's death thanking people for their
sympathy etc., which shows the connection of this Hirst family back to
Whitby.
If anyone is interested in the name of BIRD in the Grosmont area then I am
happy to share what details Ihave with them. But it is not a name I am
researching to any great extent, on in as much as it connects to HIRST.

Jenny DeAngelis.
