Hi Friends
I wonder if there's anyone on the List who might be able/willing to give me
some help and/or advice please? The background briefly is:
My maternal gx2 grandmother was Elizabeth WILSON, baptised 6 Aug 1828 at St
Nicholas Church, Guisborough, daughter of William WILSON (sometimes
labourer, sometimes collier) and Ellen (or sometimes Eleanor) - the
"sometimes" refers to other children baptised at the same church to the
same couple, I believe! This is from IGI and confirmed in the parish
registers.
The 1841 Census has William and Elenor WILSON living in Westgate,
Guisborough both age 45, together with William's father, William WILSON
Senior, 80, independent, and three of their younger children. In the same
Census, Elizabeth WILSON, 20, dressmaker, was living in Church Street with
Charles and Maria SYMOND, Charles being a grocer. William WILSON Senior
died on 27 Mar 1844 age 87 in Guisborough, the death being registered by
William WILSON in attendance, also of Guisborough.
The 1851 Census has Eleanor WILSON, widow, 59, living as a shopkeeper in
Westgate Guisborough, together with her daughter Elizabeth WILSON,
unmarried, 22, dressmaker, b Guisborough. Eleanor WILSON died on 26 Jan
1859 age 65, widow of William WILSON, labourer. The death was registered
by Elizabeth CASS, present at the death in Guisborough.
On 30 Jun 1853, Elizabeth WILSON married Richard CASS at St Nicholas
Church, Guisborough but sadly no father or occupation was recorded in the
parish register.
My questions relate to the death of Elizabeth's father, William WILSON
presumably sometime between 27 Mar 1844 (when he registered the death of
his father) and 31 Mar 1851 (when his wife Eleanor was recorded in the
Census as a widow). There are two possible deaths (S/1846 and J/1850) in
Guisborough in the GRO indexes, but neither certificate is "mine". I also
obtained the certificate for D/1846 in Stockton (Richard CASS's family came
from that place, and William might have died whilst visiting his
son-in-law's family) - but again, he isn't mine.
Looking further afield, but still in the North Yorkshire / South Durham
area, there are 9 possible deaths in the GRO index, so I'm wondering if
there might be any way(s) of trying to reduce that number before I contact
GRO to ask them to search their records for the death of a William WILSON
aged between 47 and 54. These ages come from the 1841 Census (which I know
rounds ages down to 5 years) and also from IGI and BVRI which have a
William WILSON baptised on 16 Sep 1797 at Guisborough Primitive Methodist
Church, not yet confirmed from other records. I can send the details of
those 9 entries off-list if anyone might be able to help!
I hope this summary makes sense, for I would dearly love to find a way
through this particular brickwall!
With many thanks, and all good wishes
Peter
