My g-g-g-grandmother, Jane Guy, lived in Sadberge, Durham, with her daughter Elizabeth and died in the 1840's in her 90's. My g-g-grandfather was William Guy who appears to have been the son of Jane and her husband Thomas Guy. He also lived in Sadberge, Durham. Jane stated on census forms and on parish records that she was born in London but her daughter Elizabeth was born in Penrith, Cumberland. With lots of help from people on the Durham and Cumberland boards, I discovered a Jane Sowerby who married Thomas Guy in 1782 in Skelton, Cumberland. She subsequently gave birth to Elizabeth, William, John, Joseph and Thomas all baptized at St. Andrews, Penrith, Cumberland and born between 1785 and 1801. Tracing her back to London I found a Jane Sourby/Sowerby born to Daniel Sourby and Sarah Hodgson in about 1761. There are three children on the IGI apparently belonging to this couple - one was Agness born 1761 in Sedbergh, Yorkshire (Yorkshire not Cumberland per the IGI), Mary born in 1771 in Penrith, Cumberland and Joseph born in 1773 in Hesket-in-the-Forest, Cumberland. There were quite likely more children as there is a 10 year gap between Agness and Mary. I looked up Sedbergh in my England atlas and found only one Sedbergh and it was listed as being in Cumberland. Is it feasible that this couple could have married in London, had one child in Sedbergh, and two others in Cumberland. Of course it's possible I have the wrong Daniel Sourby and Sarah Hodgson but I can't find any other couples who married in London and ended up in Cumberland with a daughter Jane. I feel convinced I have the right people. If someone can tell me where Sedbergh is located and where it was located in the late 1700's, I would appreciate it.
