go to the website

which unfortunately is organised as a database and is a waste of time as
regards google

http://www.one-name.org/register.shtml

Fearneyhough Fernihaugh fearney

http://www.one-name.org/cgibin/archive/frontpage.cgi?study=Fernyhough

http://www.one-name.org/cgibin/index.cgi?find=F

I have dropped my membership
bacause of poor results for the cost involved

BUT I leared a lot from reading the journal and the list on rootsweb is the
best on the web
http://www.one-name.org/intro.html
is an excellent web page as a guide to method

The Guild recommendation for applicants wishing to register a surname is to
have collected data relating to the name as follows.

1.. A survey to establish the size of the proposed study, the countries
that will need to be considered and relevant surname variants. Additonally
the British 1881 census (or equivalent) will give a good indication of the
distribution of the name at the end of the 19th Century.
etc etc

1 record was found that matched your request
Surname Count Ranking
FEARN 4642 =1723

which I would regards as a BIG name

and would lead to a database of 20 thousand or more items

http://www.custodian3.co.uk/Custodian_3/custodian_3.htm
is designed for this kind of work
The full version is only £39 (sterling) for the internet download version
Custodian 3 has over 100 data entry forms for all sorts of records, such as
parish records, civil registration, census returns, wills, deeds, military
and school, to name but a few. Each data entry form is customisable - most
have all the fields you need to get started but you can add fields of your
own - each form has six "spare" fields which you can utilise. Every person
in a record can be indexed and every person can have a Personal and Family
Reference, which is used to assign him/her to a family group. So even though
many of the people in your records have no proven link, those that do can be
identified, and as your research progresses and more links are found, so you
can update your information in Custodian 3. And furthermore (and new for
version 3) you can produce Family Group trees for those you do identify
links for. <<

I personally got discouraged because it does not handle gedcom files very
well

so I use http://www.familytreemaker.com/Default.aspx

a discussion group

http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/board/an/topics.software.famtreemaker

http://wc.rootsweb.com/

I have started using blogs as "home pages"

http://lapham36.blogspot.com/

and

http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=lapham

as an online database which regualry leads to new contacts and contributors
(about once a week)

my latest

http://karl-dane.blogspot.com/

I uyse the black template to enhance the phootgraphs
(taken with a Sony cell phone)
