In the 12th and 13th centuries, land within Hampstead was granted to the
Hospital of St James - the area west of Primrose Hill known as Chalcots,
then additional land around North End. In 1449 these became the property of
Eton College. Other areas were taken over by the Knights Templar; when they
were disbanded, the Hospital of St John took over the estate by Shootup
Hill. Kilburn Priory developed a hermitage and occupied the area of South
Hampstead. The Belsassis manor (Belsize) passed in private ownership but
reverted back to the Abbot of Westminster.
During the dissolution of the monasteries under King Henry VIII, various
religious orders lost their lands. The estates became Crown property, then
sold off privately.
During the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries there was a steady growth in
the villages of Kilburn, Hampstead and Highgate, evidenced by the increase
of alehouses and of christenings in the parish records. 6 inns in 1633, 26
in 1721. The King of Bohemia was established in 1680 - Hampstead's oldest
surviving pub. There is little indication of other businesses apart from
farming; inns sold general provisions
