They are parishes within the borough...
Ipswich is an ancient place, with several major parishes that segment
the town. See <www.rootsweb.com/~engdorse/PRSU.html> for a list of
possible churches and their (sometimes ancient) parishes.

The main parishes to be aware of are c 1700-1900 are:

Ipswich St Clement
Ipswich St Helen
Ipswich St Lawrence
Ipswich St Margaret
Ipswich St Mary Elms
Ipswich St Mary at Quay
Ipswich St Mary at Stoke
Ipswich St Mary le Tower
Ipswich St Matthew
Ipswich St Nicholas
Ipswich St Peter
Ipswich St Stephen

The Suffolk FHS has produced a number of CDs and booklets that cover
BMDs etc, and they normally have a useful map on the front!

There are other villages, like Nacton, etc, which used to sit outside
the town, but are now normally treated as "assimilated" 8-)

Happy hunting!
