Dear Sue,

Perhaps someone with a more up-to-date Directory for Suffolk can give you
more recent information concerning your families of later residency in Ipswich.

From Whites 1844 Suffolk (title for a county directory, one of my main
sources of information for Suffolk, thank you) there are these listings for
Singleton in Ipswich

Singleton, Mr. Thomas, St. Helen's St. [page 95]

Under Shopkeepers [p. 113]

Singleton, George, St. Margaret's grn
Singleton Wm., Upper Orwell street

Wheelwrights [p. 116]
Singleton, George, jun. and Wm. St. Margaret's green



These listings in a directory were frequently people who had some standing
in the community or were in business. Agricultural laborers and such were not
listed (and that eliminated my folks around Saxmundham, until one became a
beer seller in later years).

Here are some Johnson listings for Ipswich, 1844

Johnson, Edward Amond, governor, County gaol

Johnson, Mr. James, Norwich road

Johnson, Mr. Stephen, 30 Borough rd.

[Mr. generally indicated some standing in the community.]

No listings for Webber.

Should you have friends in London (or in Ipswich) with some free time, ask
the one in London to go to the Guildhall Library near St. Paul's and find some
other later directories for Suffolk. Of course, the county record office in
Ipswich (and perhaps the county library also) has some later directories.
White was not the only one who compiled these directories. The copy which I
have is an excellent gazetteer for the whole county--and I picked it up a LONG
time ago at a remainder table on Charing Cross road. Just lucky!

I tried a google.com search for David and Charles [publishers] but only got
something about the London Book Fair which was held in March. Perhaps D&C
don't have a website.
