Hello List
Jean Johnson of Canada suggested I might find this List helpful, so
here goes............
I've traced my paternal grandmother's family back to Lavenham. She was
a BOBY and my GGGG.Grandfather was JOHN BOBY, born c.1761 in Lavenham
and was buried there in 1811.
John married Susanna/Susan HAYWARD and they had 13 children, of whom at
least three died under five and others in late teens/early twenties.
My GGG.Grandfather SAMUEL was their 12th child, born in 1804 and he
married Maria POULSON.
Their eldest child, ALFRED, (one of nine) born 1827, was the only child
to leave Lavenham and go to London where he and his three sons didn't
fare very well, all dying of pthisis in their twenties/thirties.
Alfred at least made it into his forties! All his siblings back home
seemed to survive to a ripe old age which just goes to show that
country air was a darn sight healthier!!
I know from Jean that there is a big contingent of Bobys in the
Stowmarket/Stowupland/Bury St Edmonds areas and my mission in life is
to try and find a connection between the two "tribes". I can't believe
there ISN'T one, but how further back from John the connection is
likely to be I have no idea!!
Does any of this ring any bells, or does anyone have any ideas or clues?
I'm coming up on Monday 27th and staying with my sister-in-law in
Ipswich so that I can have a good snout around. I'll be spending the
whole of the Tuesday in Bury St Edmonds Register Office, so any clues
as to what to look for would be much appreciated. (This will be my
first visit to such a place!)
Yours very hopefully,
Mary
Devon
