Hello,
There are two places called Harleston:
- Harleston (Norfolk) which is on the Norfolk/Suffolk border and a long way
from Stowmarket.
- Harleston (Suffolk) which is surrounded by Haughley, Onehouse and
Shelland, and is extremely close to Buxhall and Stowmarket.
The Harleston I mentioned is the one close to Stowmarket. Take a look at:
- http://www.fullerfamilyhistory.org.uk/FFH_Census_Data_0001_0002.htm for
Barnards on the 1841 census;
- http://www.fullerfamilyhistory.org.uk/FFH_Census_Data_0002_0003.htm for
Barnards on the 1851 census in the Stowmarket area.
Personally, I believe that the James Clark who married Martha Stevens is NOT
James Clark Barnard - I reckon that James Clark Barnard is the person who
married Lucy Snell. I don't have enough information yet to be certain.
It's Glynis Calvesbert who believes that James Clark Barnard married Martha
Stevens. I don't know what evidence she has for this.
Regards,
Charles Fuller.

Hi,
I am on the trail of James Barnard of Buxhall who married Lucy Snell. I
had assumed that he was the James Clark Barnard who was born to James
Barnard and Elizabeth Clark in 1800.
Can you explain why it is thought that this James Clark Barnard is the
James Clark who married Martha Stevens ?
Also you say :
James (the father), William and Edward were living in Harleston between 1830
and 1851.
Can you tell me ow you know this (there is no obvious connection between
Stowmarket and Harleston - they are quite a way apart).
thanks,
Julie
