Some time ago I received much help on the CHAMBERS family from those on the
Sheffield List as my wife's gt gt aunt by marriage was Rosanna Chambers.
Hugh Waterhouse supplied me with the following extract from the Marriages
column of the Sheffield and Rotherham Independant for 9 July 1859:-
ROBINSON - CHAMBERS On the 30th ult., at the Parish Church, Ecclesfield by
the Rev. A. Gatty, vicar, Arthur Ingram Robinson Esq., solicitor, Blackburn,
eldest son of Dixon Robinson, Esq., of Clitheroe Castle, to Rosanna,
daughter of Thomas Chambers, Esq., Thorncliffe, near Sheffield
Arhtur Ingram Robinson was the eldest and brother of my wife's gt
grandfather, one Henry John Robinson, solicitor and Coroner for the
Blackburn Hundred.
Amongst the many who were involved in the "conversations" on Newton Chambers
was Dennis Wood, Prof of French Literature at Birmingham University whose
wife is a Chambers descendant and he had done extensive research in to the
Chambers family. Dennis sent me his Generations Report for the Chambers
starting with Generation No 1:
THOMS CHAMBERS was born 17 Jan 1745 in Rawmarsh, Rotherham and died 4 Jan
1817. He married HANNAH OXLEY daughter of ROBERT OXLEY.
She was born 1744 in Greasbrough, Rotherham and died 17 April 1802.
Notes for THOMAS CHAMBERS:
Ironmaster, founder with George Newton in 1793 of Newton Chambers of
Thorncliffe, Sheffield which produced iron, coal and later diinfectants -
Zal, Izal and Jryes Fluid.
This generation report includes 7 generations and covers 19 pages. If you
like to send me direct your snail mail address in NZ I will mail you a copy.
I too am New Plymouth born and bred ie a 'NAKI boy as it now seems
fashionable to call Taranaki. I attended NPBHS 1949 to 1953 and in 1963 in
St Marys in Vivian St married an Australian whose SMITH family originated
from Sheffield and so now live in Australia. I have no siblings but some
family still live or lived around New Plymouth - you may know/recognise
some:-
Robert Angus cousin Real Estate Agent.
John Ardern cousin Architect.
Don Angus uncle partner in Angus McEwen, shoe retailer. dcd
Evelyn White nee Angus aunt Whites Ltd dcd
Ross Elmes cousin over 100 games for Taranaki 1960/70s
Jenny Watt nee Angus cousin had a sports gear shop in Brougham St just up
from Devon St.
Les Mander gt uncle Manager of the Farmers Fertilizer Coy at Fitzroy. dcd
Jack Elmes father 4 Sqare Grocer in Inglewood and then Waitara. dcd
Noeline Major nee Elmes cousin Manager/Marketing Manager of Centre City.
Noel Elmes uncle grocer at Mokau and then Inglewood dcd
My mother Joan Elmes nee Angus died last year in Chalmers down at Octavius
Place
etc, etc etc.
Are your BREWSTER families the Honey or the Plant Brewsters of New Plymouth?
I went to Central Primary with Anne Brewster - they lived in Buller St -
turn right off of Eliot St into Buller St when coming down towards the sea
and they lived in the second or third house on the right.
All the best John Elmes in sunny South East Qld.
