Hello David
Could this be a form of abbreviation of Roman Numerals - or maybe a
mix of Roman and Arabic, which was just starting to appear around this
time. These are the sort of Roman Numerals I'm vaguely familiar with
- where the "j" is often used to replace the final digit in say 3 =
iij:
j or i = 1
ij or ii = 2
iij or iii = 3
jv or iv = 4
xij or xii = 12
etc
But I seem to remember seeing cases where the down stroke has almost
disappeared and one is just left with the dots ?
There are a few sites which have a stab at early handwriting - but
this is the only one that appears to tackle the problem of dates in a
meaningful manner:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/%7Eengregisters/registers/readnumbers.htm
If this doesn't appear to tie in with what you've got there is the:
OLD-ENGLISH. A mailing list for anyone who is deciphering old English
documents to discuss interpretations of handwriting and word meanings.
To subscribe send "subscribe" to
(mail mode) or (digest mode).
which would appear to be designed for this sort of question ?
Best wishes
Paul
