This might be true in some cases, but in many census records and marriage
records it clearly says: (for example) "Jane Bishop alias Tunney." The names
bear no resemblance to each other. I have wondered if it indicated adoption or
previous marriage (If they were trying to hide, why did they tell the priest
or census taker). I would also like to see an explanation. Rootsweb was not
very helpful, it just said "Be sure to record the alias." The "Alias-AKA-list"
has a lot of examples but I did not see a reason for it happening.
