If the father was fooling around, back in medieval times, with the
chambermaid, for example, would you call the child a Lovechild since
the father was not married at the time. I am trying to figure this
out with one ancestor. The book on the family conveniently skips the
parents and goes on to who her grandparents were on the father's side.
I have the Wills from both the father and step-mother. The
Step-mother supposedly hated this child with a passion. I also think
she had something to do with the writing of her husband's will so
there was no mention of this child. The child that the father had
with the Step-mother may have something to do with the hatred since
that child died very young. Only the "Lovechild" lived.

What is the difference, if any, between a base child and an
illegitimate
child?

The most commonly used term for an illegitimate child is bastard,
However
there are many other English words and phrases used in the records:
base;
baseborn; begotten in fornication; by-blow; child of shame;
lovechild; merrybegot;
merry begotten; misbegotten; ill begotten; lanebegot; scapebegotten;
basterino; chanceling; whoreson; spurious; nothus; viciatus;

In Latin there are filius nullius (son of none - the girl did not
know or
want to say); filius populi (son of the people - anyone's guess);
filius
meretricis (son of a prostitute).
