Hi Robert,
Seasons' Greetings from snow-clad Toronto, Canada.
With apologies for the formatting, which comes from one of my Word
documents, here is another brood of Chicks, this time in central Dorset:
Jane Greenham Stone Mayo, daughter of William Mayo junior and Rebecca Stone,
born in Poxwell about 1839. In Q2 of 1862, in Weymouth district (BMD ref:
5a / 567), she married John Chick, who was born in Stratton, Dorset, about
1831, baptized there on June 5, 1831, a son of John Chick and Amelia Davis.
In the 1871 census, John 39 was a farmer of 1,200 acres in Compton Valence,
Dorset, enumerated with Jane 31, Amelia 8, Alice Jane 6 and John H. 10
months. At the 1881 census, John Chick 49 was a yeoman farmer of 1,200
acres in Compton Valence, Dorset, living with wife Jane 41, John 10, William
9, Kathleen 8 and Florence 1. In the 1891 census, John was 59, head, farmer
in Compton Valence, with Jane 58, John jr 20, William 19 and Kathleen 18 at
home. In the 1901 census, John 69 was farming in Compton Valence with
Kathleen 28, single, while Jane 61 was a patient in St. Marylebone, London,
and Florence 21 was living nearby. John and Jane had issue, all their
children being born and baptized in Compton Valence:
a. Amelia Chick, baptized on March 15th., 1863 (IGI
extracted); living on her parents' farm for the 1871 census; Amelia 11
died in Q1 of 1874 in Dorchester district (BMD ref: 5a / 254);
b. Alice Jane Chick, born about 1864; Alice 6 was at
her parents' farm for the 1871 census; in the Q4 of 1890, in Dorchester
district (BMD ref: 5a / 725), she married William Roper, who was born about
1856 in Mappercombe, a son of Norris Roper, yeoman, and Sarah Harriet
Sheppard; William was a yeoman of Littlebredy, who died there in 1902;
William and Alice had issue:
? Ernest William Roper, born Q4 of 1896 in Littlebredy, birth
registered in Dorchester district (BMD ref: 5a / 341) ; later, of
Symondsbury and Sixpenny Handley, both in Dorset; GB reports that he
married; he died about 1982 in Sixpenny Handley; no issue;
? Kathleen Roper, born about 1900 in Portesbury;
c. John Chick, baptized on August 26th., 1866; buried
on August 27th., 1866;
d. Annie Chick, baptized on November 21st., 1867 (IGI
extracted); cannot find in England in the 1871 or the 1881 census; probably
died as a child, before the 1871 census;
e. John Henry Chick, baptized on July 13th., 1870; [a
John Henry Chick was married in Wincanton in Q2 of 1896]; in the 1901
census John 30 was a farmer in Lower Wynford Farmhouse, Wynford Eagle,
Dorset, with no close family;
f. William D. Chick, born approximately 1872; [the
birth of a William Davis Chick was registered in Dorchester district in Q3
of 1871]; William 19 was living with his parents in Compton Valence for the
1891 census;
g. Kathleen Chick, born approximately 1873; [the birth
of a Kathleen Chick in Dorchester district was registered in Q3 of 1873];
in the 1901 census Kathleen 28 was single, living in Compton Valence,
Dorset, with her father;
h. Florence Chick, baptized on November 13th., 1879 (IGI
extracted); living on own means in St. Marylebone, London, at the 1901
census;
Hope that this is useful.
Cheers!
Peter Ferreira
