Could they have possibly been requited by local landlord to work in his near city establishment.?
A2A is often helpful establishing who they were.
Of course there is always the old "grape vine"...nothing new in that. Information passed on from cousins and friends of a possition available.
Carriers regularly went in to the city and back (and through Kensington) with produce passengers and gossip...check out any trade directory.

Jane remarked, "Kensington area ...Why this would be an attractive
proposition for a young man (or possibly young
married couple ) from sunny Somerset is beyond me!"
Perhaps he (or they) were in fact heading for the city, but when passing
through the outskirts found employment in Kensington - and stayed there.
Market gardening, or domestic work would be probable - remember the environs
lost labour to the city centres too, which created vacancies in the
outskirts to be filed by people from even further away.

Brian
